Victoria BC newborn & baby photography FAQs
Timing and approach for newborn & baby sessions
When should newborn photos be taken? Is my baby too old for newborn photos?
While some families choose to photograph their baby very early (sometimes within the first week), many prefer to wait until their baby is a little older, more settled, and more awake. There’s no single “right” age. What matters most is creating memories about what it was like during this time in your lives.
Newborn and baby photos can be taken any time during your baby’s first year or so.
When should I book a newborn photographer, and what if my baby arrives early, late, or we need to reschedule?
Baby arrival dates are unpredictable, and I plan for that. I only book newborn sessions when I know I’ll be in town and available within a couple of months of your due date. You can book without choosing a specific day, then get in touch once your baby arrives and we’ll go from there. If you’d like a newborn session within the first week, I’m happy to schedule you last minute—I plan my calendar with flexibility in mind. There’s no penalty or extra cost if you need to reschedule or postpone. We’ll find a time that works for you and your baby.
Does my newborn need to be asleep? What if my baby is awake during the session?
My lifestyle and documentary approach means we aren’t doing those structured poses like you see in more studio-style newborn photography.
Instead, I focus on the love you have for your new baby and each other. For lifestyle mini-sessions I give you gentle, easy-to-follow directions so you look amazing and your baby can be either asleep or awake.
I’ll also take some photos of your baby alone, including some of the smaller details like eyelashes, hair, toes and finger dimples.
How long does a newborn photo session take, and what happens if my baby needs breaks or cries?
My goal is to give you an effortless, relaxed experience. That’s why my baby photo sessions are never rushed. If you book a newborn mini-session, I always work at your baby’s pace and pause the clock for feeding, changing, calming, or cuddles whenever needed. Babies cry, fuss and need nursing and that’s completely normal. I build extra buffer time around every newborn session so we can wait things out and keep the experience relaxed and easy, without pressure.
Are newborn photos done in a studio or at home? What if my house is dark?
I offer the opposite of a posed studio experience. Newborn and baby photo sessions take place in your home and are all about love, connection, and being with your baby in a way that feels natural and unforced. I’ll give easy direction but there’s no formal posing. We only need a blanket and a simple spot like the floor, a bed, a couch, or anywhere with window light. I use digital cameras that can work beautifully in low light, and if needed I can bring soft video lighting so there are no strobes or flashes bothering your baby’s tender eyes.
What if my house is messy? Do I need to do a lot of work to prepare for photos?
I know this time in your lives is exhausting, and the last thing you need is pressure to tidy or stage your home. Mess in the corner? Dirty dishes? Leave them there. Newborn and baby photos are mostly intimate and zoomed in, and after more than 20 years as a professional photographer, I have a knack for choosing angles and light so everyday clutter simply doesn’t show. We usually work in one small area using natural window light, and all that really matters is you and your baby.

What should we or our baby wear? Can we do several outfit changes?
Wear something comfortable that feels like you. Solid colours and simple textures photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than clothing. There’s no need to perfectly match, and no pressure to buy anything new. For babies, simple outfits, a diaper, or a swaddle all work well. Multiple outfit changes are absolutely fine. Sessions are never rushed, but I work efficiently and can capture a wide variety of images in a short period of time, making it easy to include outfit changes for babies without disrupting the flow of the session.
Can parents, siblings, grandparents, or pets be included in newborn photos?
Absolutely. These photos are a story of this time in your lives. Fur babies, siblings and grandparents are all a part of that! Anyone you want in your photos are welcome!
Is newborn photography safe? What if you're sick?
You and your baby’s health always comes first.
- If I’m sick, I don’t photograph babies. Full stop. If you’re hoping for a session during a specific timeframe and don’t want to wait I have a network of trusted photographers with a similar style and approach, and I’m happy to connect you with one of them to take my place.
- I get my COVID and flu booster shots regularly, I’m careful about hygiene, and it’s no problem for me to wear a mask.
- I wash my hands, avoid touching things in your home, and stay mindful the entire time.
- Unlike studio photography, we aren’t posing babies or keeping them in one position. You’re holding your baby for most of the session, and everything we do is gentle, baby‑led, and focused on comfort and safety.
What if we need to reschedule or cancel our newborn photos?
There’s no penalty or extra cost if you need to reschedule or cancel.
What is the price of your Victoria BC newborn photography? How many photos will we receive, and will they be in colour or black and white? Can we get a sneak peek?
You can choose either a lifestyle mini-session or a longer one-hour session. Please see my Victoria BC newborn and baby photo pricing and information guide for more information.
- You’ll receive an unlimited number of high‑resolution digital images.
- Even shorter sessions typically deliver at least 25–30 images, and often more.
- Longer documentary sessions usually result in 80 or more images.
- Every image is delivered with two versions – one in colour + one in black and white so you have flexibility when it comes to printing and sharing.
- I always send one or more sneak‑peek images within 48 hours so you can use them for announcements or arrival cards.
- The full gallery is delivered within four weeks, but it’s usually ready considerably faster.
What locations do you offer newborn and baby photography? Do you travel?
Yes. I photograph newborns and babies in homes throughout Greater Victoria and the surrounding areas, including Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay, Esquimalt, Colwood, Langford, Sooke, Metchosin, Sidney, Brentwood Bay, Mill Bay, Duncan, Cowichan Bay, and the Cowichan Valley. If you’re unsure whether your location is included, just ask.
Locations more than a two hour drive or requiring a ferry or plane ride may include an extra travel fee. I can give you a quote so there are no surprises.
Can I purchase a newborn or baby gift certificate?
Baby and newborn gift certificates make great presents and I often have grandparents choosing this option! I can also create a gift certificate as a group gift for baby showers, too.
I am happy to package the gift certificate in a special box, wrapping it like a present, and either drop them off, give them to you to pass along, or send them electronically—whatever is easiest for you.
Can you keep our photos private? Is the gallery secure?
I completely respect that not everyone wants their photos shared publicly.
- When you book, you’ll receive a contract where you can let me know if you’d like to keep your images private, and I always honour that choice.
- Your online gallery can also be completely private, secure, and password‑protected, and only the people you choose to share the password with will be able to view or download the images.
- If you’d like your images kept entirely offline, I can also provide a USB, which adds applicable 7% PST.
