Victoria BC Portrait & Wedding Venue Spotlight: Beacon Hill Park

Beacon Hill Park wedding with a permit near the gardens in Victoria BC

Beacon Hill Park has long been one of my favourite locations for both family and engagement portrait sessions and wedding photos! It’s a place I’ve visited so many times I know it like the back of my hand, and yet… I always find something new and exciting whenever I take people there.

Beacon Hill Park offers a unique mix of natural and landscaped spaces, with ocean views, gardens, forested paths, and open meadows. It’s a great choice for weddings, elopements, prom shoots, family reunions, newborn and maternity portraits. Highlights include:

  • The rose garden is one of the most popular spots, especially when it’s in bloom, with soft light and a classic feel.
  • The stone bridge and ponds offer a quiet, timeless backdrop with water and greenery.
  • The edges of the park near Dallas Road provide beautiful ocean views and open sky, especially at sunset.
  • Forested paths create a softer, more intimate setting with filtered light and natural textures.
  • Meadow areas and open fields give a more wild, natural look, especially during golden hour.
  • There are also rocky areas, tall grasses, and tucked‑away corners that work really well for couples who want something less traditional.

FAQ – Weddings and elopements at Beacon Hill

Do you need a permit to get married at Beacon Hill Park?
Yes. The City of Victoria requires a Special Event Permit for all weddings and elopements in Beacon Hill Park. It’s free to apply, but you should submit your application well in advance, ideally at least 6 to 8 weeks before your date to make sure your location is available. A note that you will need general liability insurance for your event. Most couples purchase this through the City if they don’t already have coverage. This is standard for events in public parks.

How many people can attend a wedding or elopement?
There is no strict guest limit, but Beacon Hill Park is best suited for small weddings, intimate ceremonies, and elopements. Because it is a public space, larger gatherings can be difficult to manage.

Does Beacon Hill Park have cherry blossoms?

You bet they do! Cherry blossoms are in full bloom from mid-February through to late April and make a great backdrop for wedding or family portraits.

What times can weddings take place?
Weddings and elopements can take place between 10:00 AM and sunset. Your permit allows up to 4 hours total, including setup, the ceremony, portraits, and cleanup.

Can you reserve a private area of the park? What about bringing decor or chairs?
No. Beacon Hill Park is open to the public at all times. You cannot rope off areas or restrict access, and it’s normal for people to walk through or nearby during your ceremony. You can also bring decor and chairs but everything must be carried in by hand. No vehicles are allowed on the grass. Chairs must have rounded bottoms to protect the turf. Decor must be minimal and cannot be attached to trees or the ground. Tents are allowed but cannot exceed 20 by 20 feet. They must be secured with weights or sandbags, and nothing can be staked into the ground.

Can you have music or a speaker?
Amplified sound is not allowed in City of Victoria parks, so most ceremonies are kept simple and unplugged.

Can you bring alcohol?
No. Alcohol is not permitted in Beacon Hill Park.

FAQ portraits, grads, fashion shoots, birthday parties and family reunions at Beacon Hill Park

Where are the best places for portraits in Beacon Hill Park?

Beacon Hill Park is one of the best locations in Victoria for family, engagements, prom or fashion photography because there’s so much variety in one place. And, because everything is close together, it’s easy to move between spots and get a mix of different backdrops during a single session (even mini-sessions)

  • The grassy open areas are great for kids to run around and feel comfortable, which helps create natural, relaxed photos.
  • The gardens and ponds work well if you want something more polished but still outdoors.
  • The forested trails are perfect for a quieter, more candid feel, especially for families who want something a bit softer and less posed.
  • The beach access areas and water views are ideal for families who want that coastal Victoria look without needing a second location.
  • The petting zoo area can also be fun for younger kids, though it’s usually best as a quick stop rather than the main photo location.

Are dogs allowed in the park? Can we include our dog in our portrait session?
Yes, but dogs must be on leash except in designated off‑leash areas. Many couples and families include their dogs in their photos.

Can you have a family reunion, birthday party or picnic at Beacon Hill Park?
Yes. Beacon Hill Park is a great location for family reunions, picnics, and casual gatherings. The park is designed for shared public use, and many families use it for birthdays, reunions, and relaxed get-togethers.

Do you need a permit for a picnic, birthday party or family reunion?

For small, informal gatherings, you generally do not need a permit. If you’re meeting with family, bringing food, and using the space casually, you can use the park on a first‑come, first‑served basis. If your gathering is larger, more organized, or involves equipment or setup, you may need a park permit. You should consider a permit if:

  • You have a large group (especially around 50+ people)
  • You want to reserve a specific location
  • You’re bringing tents, tables, or structured setup
  • You’re organizing something more formal or planned
  • Without a permit, spaces are shared and not guaranteed.

Can you reserve a picnic spot in advance?
Not without a permit. If you don’t have a permit, all areas are first come, first served.
