Forget everything you thought you knew about Family Portraits
We believe in capturing you and your children in a fun, spontaneous and candid way. We’ll capture the butterfly kisses, silly expressions and wiggly toes without asking anyone to hold still and smile. There are lots of places where you can have portraits taken showing what your children look like. If you go through our portfolio you’ll notice everyone is playing and being themselves. After all, it’s these unscripted moments that are the memories you’ll cherish in years to come. Portraits make great Christmas, Birthday, Mothers Day and Fathers Day gifts. It’s also an awesome way to capture a family reunion.
Family Portraits Manuel Antonio Costa Rica
Q: Do you take traditional posed family portraits or do you only do photojournalism/candid photography?
Most people choose me for a more candid/photojournalism approach to portrait photography. Your kids will respond better to me if I act like a playmate, rather than a professional photographer who is there to do a job. Kids will naturally mug for me, without me needing to ask anything of them. Even shy children will become curious, especially if I don’t ask them to pose or give them any directions at all (and this is especially important for shy children). However, we’re happy to take a few portraits of you and your family looking at the camera and smiling. These are usually best done at the end of our time together because your children will be more comfortable.
Q: Do you provide digital copies or just prints?
We provide several different packages that allow you to choose what works best for you and your family. Since the majority of our families are on vacation, we make it easy for you to order prints or download your photos online when you get home. In addition to purchasing digital copies, you can also have a custom-made album, canvas prints or Christmas cards.
Q: Where are you based?
From November to May Derek and Christina are in beautiful Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. We’re also a hop skip and a jump from Dominical, Matapalo, Playa Hermosa, Herradura (Los Suenos and Villa Caletas), and Jaco. Gwen is in Tamarindo, Gunacaste during some of the winter months.
Q: What should we wear?
There is no dress code; however, be mindful that prints or logos can date your photos in years to come. You don’t have to match. I usually recommend people wear something timeless.
Q: My kids have a fussy schedule. Are you flexible?
We’re absolutely flexible. We will mention that we will have better results (and way more flattering portraits) if we photograph your family either close to sunrise or sunset. The background will show up better as well. However, we can work with any light. Please get in touch and we can certainly discuss options to make sure you have awesome photos regardless of the time of day.
Q: What if my kids won’t cooperate on the day we schedule?
We’re flexible. If your kids aren’t cooperating for portraits (for instance, if your baby is teething or one of your children gets sick) we can reschedule.
Q: Do you offer pet photography?
Absolutely! Before getting into portrait and wedding photography, Christina was focused on wildlife and nature photography. You can see some of her work with wildlife here: http://www.naturestocklibrary.com She’s very comfortable capturing beautiful portraits of animals acting naturally.
I want candid photos of my family, but I don’t want to look bad. Do you still fix up blemishes? Can I dress up to look my best?
We totally get that you want to look awesome in your photos! First of all, blemishes will definitely be fixed. Most people wear everyday clothing that is suitable for playtime. We understand that you want flattering photos, and we can still achieve this without any posing. With our photojournalism background, we’re in tune with people’s natural movements, so we know when to click the shutter so you and your kids look great.
Q: How do I book a portrait session?
