We have photographed weddings in Victoria BC and Vancouver Island for more than 10 years. In that time we’ve seen some absolutely amazing wedding venues. We created this page to share our personal favorites. We’ve chosen these wedding ceremony and reception spots based on a few things, but mostly how beautifully they photograph. We are suckers for a venue with amazing light, lots of shady areas to duck out of the heat (plus the light is more flattering in the shade), and lots of beautiful backgrounds for romantic wedding portraits. So, without further adieu, here’s our list of the BEST places to have your Victoria wedding!
Best Places for your Victoria Wedding
10) Horticultural Centre of the Pacific Victoria, BC http://hcp.ca/rental_bookings/weddings/
The wedding pavilion accommodates 100 people.
Why we love it for Victoria wedding photography: First of all, the grounds are absolutely gorgeous. While Butchart Gardens is the most famous place in town, the Horticultural Centre is a close second. The property has a ton of places for portraits, lots of shady areas to duck out from the sun, and they have a covered wedding pavilion in case of rain. We love that it has both outdoor and indoor spots for your wedding. This is the perfect venue for anyone having a rustic-chic wedding in Victoria.
We chose the Empress because it’s the most iconic place in all of Victoria for your wedding. The hotel has 464 rooms (with special discounts for guests). Plus, they will also host elopements. The historical building has several ballrooms of varying sizes, accommodating up to 500 guests, making it one of the larger places to host big Chinese, Vietnamese, South Asian, Indian or Sikh weddings on Vancouver Island. The grounds include a rose garden and the interior is out of a fairy tale. This is a beautiful venue for anyone having a black-tie, sophisticated celebration. We also love that it’s close to other main attractions in town, including the Legislature and Victoria harbourfront.
This resort has 15,000 square feet of venue space for indoor or outdoor weddings and the Abutus Ballroom can accommodate up to 500 wedding guests, making it another reception space for larger celebrations. We love lots of things about the Ocean Point Hotel is the view from the grounds. It’s very close to the Victoria Harbourfront, and there’s a large rock that faces both the harbour and the Empress hotel. It makes for some pretty awesome wedding and engagement portraits. The ballrooms and interior are simple, but we also love the large glass wall that overlooks Victoria. Again, we’re suckers for places that have awesome backdrops for portraits. In addition to all of this, the staff at the Ocean Point are AWESOME! We’ve experienced some of the best customer service in town here.
This facility has 1.5 acres of landscaped gardens and the outdoor ceremony space can accommodate 150-180 guests (with a covered gazebo for the couple). They also offer elopement packages. Receptions can be held in the Rosemead Dining Room (accommodating 75 seated guests, 150 for cocktails); the courtyard garden tent (110 seated, 150 cocktails), and the Ivy Room (18-20 seated guests).
This is a more intimate, boutique place to host your wedding, whether it’s your ceremony, reception or both. Each room in the inn is completely different, with all kinds of nooks and crannies, and best of all beautiful window light. The gardens are usually where people host their wedding ceremony, but we’ve also photographed one event where the couple was rained out, so the hotel hosted the ceremony inside on the stairway. If you have the option of having the dining room as your rain plan location we think it would probably be less squishy for your guests. But still, the place is gorgeous with lots of variety, making your wedding photos look amazing. This is the perfect wedding venue for anyone wanting a vintage-look-and-feel to their day.
When you live on the west coast you HAVE to put a camground on your best-of-wedding-locations list! This is the spot where our photographer Gwen said her vows to hubby Tony, and we’ve since photographed several weddings in this amazing forest. It’s almost completely outdoors, so you’ll only want to organize a ceremony here in the summer months (or supply your guests with umbrellas as party favors). The group site is completely separate from the public campground, making it completely private. Your party can go on forever with no noise restrictions. Out of town guests can park their campers and tents to stay the night. Best of all, there is a covered cabin with a woodstove in case it starts to get cold. This wedding venue is for the more woodsy, eco-chic outdoor loving couple and their wedding guests.
We love that the Inn at Laurel Point is chic, modern and – most importantly – eco conscious. In terms of wedding photography. the place is magic. They usually host weddings outdoors under a big white tent and then there are some really pretty Japenese gardens for wedding portraits after. The main reception room is glass, so you have so much sunshine continuing to make everyone happy on a bright, sunny, summer day. Our photographer Christina likes this space so much she’s even hosted wedding photography workshops here! Their main wedding space can accommodate up to 200 wedding guests. They also have smaller penthouse suites to host a private elopement with up to six guests. And their bridal suites are gorgeous as well, allowing you to overlook the Victoria harbour while getting ready for the big event.
This resort has several awesome spots to have your wedding in Victoria, including the Rooftop Gardens (outdoor), the Atrium (indoor but covered), the City Club Lounge (modern and chic) and the Urban ballroom (for larger events). We love the modern, stylish, urban feel to this swanky, luxury hotel. It’s close to downtown, and across the street from St. Ann’s Academy, making it a great, central location for after-ceremony portraits. There are covered areas, and the indoor spaces are as pretty as the outdoor spaces. Once again, we’re suckers for their window light.
This is one of the most charming, beautiful places to host your wedding in Victoria. That’s why it made #3 of our top 10 places to get married in Victoria list. You can have your wedding outdoors in the garden gazebo, or indoors in the stunning chapel, built in 1858. We’ve photographed a number of Christian, religious ceremonies in the chapel of all denominations. For those with an interest in drama, you can have a Hollywood- or Theatre-themed wedding in the auditorium, equipped with theatre seating! In the spring the cherry blossoms take over the entire front garden! This Victoria wedding venue also has great light. We never need to use our flashes indoors!
The Hatley Castle mansion at Royal Roads University is one of the most luxurious places to host your wedding. You’ll wow guests with the historical castle that has been featured in movies and TV shows such as X-Men, Smallville, and Masterminds. It’s probably one of the more expensive places to have your wedding, but also the most magical. The grounds themselves are extensive and feature an Italian, croquet, Japanese and rose gardens. You can have your ceremony in any of the gardens, or in front of the castle, tented or indoors. For us wedding photographers – the entire place is paradise. Every corner is a gorgeous backdrop for wedding portraits.
1) Craidelonia Lodge http://craidelonna.com/ While it’s technically in Sooke, we’ve chosen this venue as #1 because it offers the quintessential west coast experience. It’s relatively small (accommodating about 50-70 guests), but you have the entire place to yourself. It has a bed and breakfast feel, with fireplaces throughout. There’s a path and stairway that lead down to the pebbly beach, which provides beautiful, misty landscapes. And while we’re mentioning Craidelona, we should also tell you about Sooke Harbour House, an equally spectacular spot (just down the street). The key difference between the two locations is that you can have Craidelona all to yourselves (with no other hotel guests or tourists nearby).
